Q & A:
Why does my boat blow fuses?
I have a 1987 Rinker 4.3 inboard with stern drive. When I am out on the water it sometimes blows the main fuse not giving power to any thing on the boat. I try a new larger fuse and it blows that fuse. Sometimes after the boat has sat for a while it will eventully take another fuse. And the boat could run all day or blow another fuse. Any suggestions on how to track the problem?
Don't keep putting larger fuses in, that can lead to a fire, or other damage. It sounds like a short somewhere that moisture can accumulate. If it sits out for a while then dries and the problem goes away, it seems as though water is finding an open spot in a wire's insulation or a terminal has been exposed, and is causing a short in the circuit. Vibration can also be the culprit under the same circumstances. What you need is an Ohm meter to check your wiring. Unfortunately I could type here for days on what and where to try, so if you have any friends that are all electrically inclined, now the time to bribe them with beer, pizza, and boat rides.
